Ending Period Poverty in Bristol: Our Partnership with Period Friendly Places

Lucy Meacher

Big news! We’re thrilled to announce our brand-new partnership with Bristol charity Period Friendly Places!

Why it matters

Period poverty is not a distant issue; it affects many people in our communities every day.

It means a lack of access to menstrual products, education, hygiene facilities, or a combination of these, due to cost.

  • 27% of girls overuse sanitary products as they can’t afford fresh ones, risking their health and hygiene.
  • 41.2% of women and girls in Bristol have been affected by an inability to afford menstrual products (compared to a national average of 27%).
  • 40% of Bristol students have missed school at some point due to period poverty.

At Eleria, we believe access to safe, sustainable period care is a basic right. So together, with Period Friendly Places, we are striving to provide reusable sanitary products to those who are unable to access what they need.

Why menstrual cups?

Made from medical grade silicone, Eleria cups are reusable and last for up to 10 years...

...which means one cup donation can help take someone out of period poverty for that 10 year duration. As a result, charities will be able to help so many more people, and products needed to support a person significantly decreases with reusable options.

About Period Friendly Places

Period Friendly Places aims to eradicate period poverty by providing free products at over 47 community venues across Bristol, so that people can take what they need when they need it. The Charity is run by volunteers and almost all of the products they distribute are donated by the generosity of the general public. Their work raises awareness of the issue and beyond the point of need of help, they encourage the use of sustainable and reusable products.

How does it work?

Our Donate a Cup scheme is simple:

  1. Purchase a cup here
  2. Eleria will send your donated period cup straight to Period Friendly Places HQ
  3. Period Friendly Places will distribute the cup to someone in need

As a Bristol-based, female-founded start-up, we’re proud to give back to the community where it all began. Not only are we providing safe, reusable products, but also the information and support people need to use them with confidence

We’re excited to partner with Eleria to provide menstrual cups to those who would not normally be able to afford them. Where there is energy and food poverty there is period poverty and reusable products provide a better and

longer-term solution to the 1 in 5 people who experience period poverty in

their lifetime.
