How and when you should sterilise your period cup?

Wondering how to sterilise your period cup? Don't worry - we've got you covered. There are a few different ways to sterilise your period cup between cycles. They are all highly effective, so you can try as many methods out as you like and find which one works best for you! Let's run through them!
Firstly, it's important to talk about when you need to sterilise your period cup:
- When you buy/unbox your period cup - before you use it
- After your period has finished and/or before your period starts again (some like to do both for extra peace of mind!)
- If you drop your cup in the toilet or on the floor (it happens!)
Method 1: Boiling on the hob
One of the most common methods for sterilising period cups is by using boiling water. Simply boil some water in a saucepan and fully submerge your cup in the water for 7-15 minutes. Do not boil dry.
Take care with boiling water, it's recommended to set it aside for it to cool down before handling. Alternatively, slowly pour some of the water away and add some cold water to be able to pick up your cup without the risk of burning yourself!
Method 2: Sterilising solution
Another great method some prefer to use is sterilising solution. Add your sterilising tablet or liquid to some water as per the manufacturer's instructions, add your cup to the solution and leave to sterilise for as long as stated. It's another simple and easy way to keep your period cup nice and clean - plus a great option if you don't have access to a hob or microwave, when camping for example!
Method 3: Microwave with Eleria Cleaning Case
We have developed our very own product that helps make the sterilisation process that bit easier for period cup users! As per the instruction leaflet that comes with your cleaning case, pop your cup into the case and submerge it in water. Keep one of the lids off and place your case into a microwave for 3 minutes.
Take care when removing your case from the microwave as it will be hot! Either use some oven gloves or leave the case to stand and cool down for a while. Simply pour the water out of the case and now you have your sterilised cup!

Finally, ensure you store your cup in a clean, dry place to avoid contamination. If you have an Eleria cup, you can store it in your handy drawstring bag until you need it again!
