Have you tried to use a menstrual cup, but ended up reverting back to tampons and pads because your cup started leaking? Getting the hang of correctly using cups can take some time and is a bit of trial and error for many, especially when they leak. But don't worry, we're here to help with some tips and tricks for any beginners out there, and using cups will be second nature to you in no time!
Two reasons your menstrual cup may be leaking - and how to fix them!
1. Your menstrual cup may not have fully opened properly when inserted
If your cup fails to open properly when inserted, it means the seal won't have formed against your vaginal walls, which may cause leakages! When inserting your cup, you should feel it softly pop open. If not, lightly pinch the base of the cup or give it a small wiggle to help it correctly open.
If you feel like your cup isn't opening properly, consider trying another fold. Read our how-to guide on different folds such as the punch-down, c-fold, double-diamond fold, 7-fold, and the origami fold. Let us know how you get on and which is your favourite!
2. Your menstrual cup may not be positioned correctly
If you feel like you have inserted your cup but still finding yourself with leakages, your cup may be positioned incorrectly - it could be too high or too low. Your cup should be positioned just under your cervix, and you shouldn't be able to feel it once it's in - just like a tampon. To double check it's correctly inserted, you can feel around the top of the cup when you have inserted it, to check the seal has correctly been formed.
If you still feel uncomfortable and not quite sure when you have inserted your cup, why not try a cup with a different shape, such as The Pink One, which is great for those that have a tilted cervix. Alternatively, if you have correctly inserted your cup, but the stem feels uncomfortable, you can trim it to suit your needs. Read more on how to correctly trim the stem of your cup.
