Lucy MeacherShare
Period cups are a great plastic-free, reusable alternative to tampons and pads that you may be familiar with using during your period. For some, period cups might be a bit unknown or unfamiliar to try, but we're here to make the process as easy as possible to transition from disposables to cups by giving you some of our best tips and tricks in the book to get you started!
1. Find the right period cup for you
Finding the right cup for you might be daunting, as there are many shapes, sizes, colours, and brands to choose from! Ultimately, if you are a cup beginner, you'll want something to get the hang of easily and you can always upgrade when you're a pro and you've mastered your technique! The Green One is perfect for beginners - it has the classic bell shape and sturdy stem, which is designed for easy insertion and removal!

There are other shapes and sizes to try that are designed to suit the needs for different people. 2. Inserting your cup
Not sure on how to insert your period cup? Don't worry, you're not the only one - we've all been there! Check out our step-by-step instructions on how to insert your cup here. If you're worried about it, try practicing inserting the cup before your period starts to get a feel for how it works without the risk of any mess! Cups don't absorb any fluids, they just collect it, so don't worry you wont get that painful removal that you would with a dry tampon. There are many different folds to try too, find out more about them here!
Another thing to remember whilst inserting your cup is to relax your vaginal muscles as much as possible, so it's important to take your time and don't panic if you don't get it right the first time - it usually takes a few attempts to really master it and become a pro, but you'll be there in no time!
3. Removing your cup
When removing your cup, it's important to remember to not tug at the stem. Gently pinch the bottom of the cup to break the seal before slowly pulling the cup out. Whilst you're getting the hang of things, why not practice removing your cup in the shower the first few times if you're afraid of making a mess! Take a look at our step-by-step guide for more information and advice on removing your cup here!
4. Keeping your cup clean and sterile
Finally, it's vital to remember to sterilise your cup before you first use it, as well as at the end or beginning of each cycle. It's also really important to wash your hands before you go anywhere near inserting or removing your cup. This reduces any chances of bacteria going anywhere you don't want it, which might cause irritation or infections!
